Espen Talaïtha
Step off the train all alone at dawn
Back into the hole where I was born
The sun in the sky never raised an eye to me
full name, Espen Talaïtha
nicknames, Pen (but there's really nobody left that's allowed to call him that)
age, 18
class/profession, His family wasn't the most well off, but they always had enough to made due comfortably. Now on his own he does only odd jobs to get by day to day. Sometimes physical labor in a shop or home, sometimes tending to horses or running messages. Whatever pays.
marital status, Single
race, Man
alliance, He's allied to Rohan, though how it once was. And he against Sauron, though if asked he's largely apathetic
hair, Espen's hair is a golden blond that once rested neatly above his shoulders but was nearly all cut off a few years ago after the incident and he refuses to let grow it back in the way he and his twin had it styled. It now runs down his forehead in straggly peices just above his eyes and stops at the edge of his neck in the back. It's easily managable at that legnth and looks fairly well-kept most of the time.
eyes, His eyes are big, and a very bright, somewhat electrifying blue, despite the fact they've dulled considerably since he was younger. They tend to express how he's feeling so the sombered blue-gray they'd taken up is not entierly unusual. He seems to have a permanenty distant and far away look when he's being spoken to, as if he's not always all there.
build and body, Though not short, Espen stands slightly below the typical man somewhere in the upper five foot range. He lost a signifigant amount of weight in a short period of time, and it's generally easy to tell he was at one point very fit and well-muscled, was for a while too too thin, and now probably could be best described as lean.
anything else, He's heavily scarred from the incident, some mostely faded and others still freash looking; some that still pain him but many from injuries which he can't even recall the were at the time so trival seeming. He takes a conscious effort into covering them up mostly for his own benifit; hair grown out over a gash on his temple, high collars over his neck, arms always covered by long sleeves, and gloved hands where one is bent from being broken and not correctly set.
face claim, Bradley James

likes,Working - Generally the work he performs is simple and repetitive, and even when it's not, its something to do so that he doesn't have to sit around by himself somewhere and think. If he centers his day around finding work, doing work, and then getting paid and eating and sleeping, he doesn't have to do anything else. And frankly, he doesn't want to.
Star Watching - He used to watch the stars with his brother and sister when they were younger and couldn't sleep. They'd try to make shapes out of them, or sometimes just count them until they got tired. Its one of their few things that he can still bring himself to do and enjoy. And its actaully the only way he can get to sleep anymore.
the Riders of Rohan - Since they were maybe ten, Holden and Espen wanted to become skillful riders and swordsmen like the army of Rohan. Though those dreams are long gone, Espen still admires them greatly and sees them as the general index of right and wrong.
dislikes,Being alone - As much as he secludes himself from anyone and everyone, he can't be completely by himself or in somewhere completely dark and silent without getting out of his head. He needs people around, even if they're just walking past.
Questions - Espen generally doesn't talk more than he needs to (and up until recently, didn't talk at all) and so when people start asking questions he tends to get really uncomfortable and shy away. He really doesn't have any ability to speak with people he doesn't know. Again, he just liked them for background noise.
Pity - He really can't stand hearing people apologize for things they didn't do. If they want to make it better, they need to frind Alty and bring Holden back from the dead. For the first year after the incident, all anyone did was give him pity. Granted, he couldn't do much physically, wouldn't speak to anyone, and had panic attacks and nightmares on a regular basis. He still can't stan being stared at.
strengths,Swords - for years as a child Espen's father trained him and his brother in the art of weaponary, and he took to the sword faster than anyone would have thought. With years of training he became more than able and though he's a bit out of practice, if you canget a sword in his hand, he's a force to be reckoed with.
Stoicism - Yeah, stoic means apathetic, but it also means sober and enduring and dignified. Espen doesn't complain. He does what needs to be done, does it well, takes his stuff, and moves on. for as much as he's a mess in his head, he doesn't whine and burden others with his problems. He knws what kind of a position he's in and he knows beggars can't be choosers. He's not choosy.
Compassionate - He might not give a shit about himself, but he cares about others. he's not just gonna walk past some kid in trouble or something. If someone needs something done and they ask nicely, he'll do it for them. Honestly, he knows things aren't getting better for him. But if he's gonna walk around on this earth he might as well improve someone else's day.
weaknesses,Crowds/Busy situations - being around too many people, or too bright lights or loud sounds or anything, usually does more harm than good as far as Espen is concerned. He can't focus when he can't figure out where everyone and everything is. He'll just end up running or something.
Physically demanding things - despite doing some more brutal labor and being able to lug things around for hours and stuff, it's been a long time since Espen's really trained or travelled or anything like that. he knows how to work around his strong and his weak sides, but battle doesn't give that kind of oppertunitiy.
Selective memory/ Dissociation - Because ten out of ten times he doesn't have any help out from the bad places, he's sort of created a way to erase them from his mind. When they come in though, they come in at full force, and it'll be hour sometimes befre he comes to and realized when and where he is.
fears, generally anything that's going to trigger him. its never the same. blood, screams, the smell of orcs.
dreams, he really doesn't have any. he's going through the motions for the hell of it.
personality,Espen doesn't happen to appear to have much of one of these. Like i said, he tends to look far away, terrified and curious. That basically sums him up. Far less mature than he was when he was twelve. He has a general aura of apathy, not really caring what happens to him or the word around him anymore. Not when he's half a set, and a broken up half at that, and that's just all he can ever be. He's silent, reliable, well known but usually just as that, and he generally doesn't care what people have to say or think about him. He's got himself a nice little equalibruim set up where things make sense, and he keeps himself there, and tries to keep others from breaking it, which never happens. You could probably stand right in front of him and insult him and not get any reaction, yet some little sound in the corner of the room might have him wanting to punch you in the face. The fact that little things scare the hell out of him and he can't remember where he is in real time maybe once a week frustrates him insanely, but, that's just how it is.

history,Espen's childhood was generally normal. With a twin brother born only a minute before him, he was never without a best friend and partner in crime, and never without something to do or get into. Five years later the two got a listtle sister, and again, there wasn't anything to sepate them from any other family around the area. There was a strange pendant the two had to try on when they were thirteen to see if one may be able to weild, but to be honest, they decided prior to that that even if it did 'choose' one of them, they weren't going to choose it. They were the kind of twins who wore the same things and went to the same places to confuse people, and the idea of only one beig able to do sometrhing hadn't sat well with them. They'd much rater have taken up combat as a tag team. Luckily, they were rejected. And they went on about their lives as normal. Then there was the incident.
They'd just turned fifteen when orcs raided the village. They heard the screams before their door was busted open. They didn't go down without a fight, no not them, their mother, father or sister, not even when they were kidnapped. Laern had put himself out first though, and he was the first to die. Espen remembered his mother telling Altaïre to run with the pendant and seeing her little body dissapear in the madness. That had been their mother's last words. Holden and Espen were dragged out somewhere, tortured until the orcs found something better to do, and left for dead. Holden didn't make it long. Espen had him in a tight hold, his own blood mixing with his brother's, voice gone from yelling at him to wake up and mostely unconscious himself when they were foind by riders.
When he woke up he was on a bed, it wasn't his, he was wrappd up in bandages, and even the flicker of candle light made him feel like his head was going to explode. He fumbled round until a woman came in and set him back, explained to him what happened, left out that his brother was dead. He didn't ask her. He didn't answer he either. In fact, for the next year he didn't say a word to anyone. Months he spent recovering, more stitches and broken bones than he could count. The head injury kept making him get sick, the sickness kept making him delusional. when he finally well enough to go on his own, he honestly didn't have a clue what to do with the wide world around him.
They'd said some things about him, about his mind, but he hadn't thought much of it until it started effecting him. He wandered back to his home, still in ruins, and sat around there for long enough, before coming to see he needed to move on. he started picking up odd jobs in little cities, gradually getting back into the swing of life, but never really wanting to get out and live.
